These ladies, based in Nashville, made my husband’s and my wedding announcements, which were custom, gorgeous, perfect, heartfelt and something like $250 total. We didn’t have a wedding so it was important to us that our announcements felt right. And the Nesting Project team did an absolutely stunning job.

I was just reminded of them because they sent an email about a fundraiser they’re doing but I had to pass along the url. Please pass their info along to anyone you know who’s at the invitation stage of wedding planning. I know it can be a painful, costly process and these peeps do it right, with no pain!

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: A bunch of lifeguards in El Monte, CA, recently created this “Gangnam Style” video — but city administrators caught wind of it, and promptly fired them for “using the facility for private use and wearing uniforms in public while off-duty.”

The video was deemed ”disgusting” and an “embarrassment to the city of El Monte.”

Hey, uptight city officials — if U.S. soldiers in full uniform can get away with a “Call Me Maybe” cover while stationed in Afghanistan, wethinks the El Monte 14 should be rehired ASAP.

Also, this little lady, Billie Tweddle. Apparently, she’s twelve. Not like she’s so young she’s “like” twelve. She’s actually twelve. Not sure how to process that. But she is very talented and it’s kind of awesome to hear this beautiful but kind of jaded song interpreted by the Angel of Innocence.

I discovered 20x200 in 2007 when I happened to walk into the Jen Bekman Gallery on my way to work. I worked on the Bowery when it was more this Bowery and less this Bowery.

Jen Bekman was showing Nina Berman. And it was the most powerful gallery show I had ever seen.

I took the flyer on my way out the door. It advertised 20x200 and also this thing called Hey, Hotshot. Ordinarily it would end up in the bin but I found myself thinking about the Nina Berman all day and ended up on 20x200 eventually.

It was love at first click. This was my first print.

20x200 is the reason I live with art. And I don’t just live with it. I meditate on it. Show it off. Cherish it, sometimes for reasons I don’t completely understand. But that’s the potential of living with art, I think. It helps deepen your connection to your living space and (it’s a cliche but a true one) makes a house a home.

And 20x200 makes it so easy. Literally anyone with $24 to spare can become an art collector. An insider. Although all that inclusivity won’t help you when you’ve waited too long. When it’s gone it’s gone. Here’s my one that got away. Sigh.

So, 20x200 is celebrating 5 years of making it easy and affordable to live with art but also 5 years of helping artists eat and have their work seen all over the world. That’s a noble mission that I’d like to see continued for another 50(0) years…

Found this panel on @thegothamgal’s blog, which I love, and wanted to re-post it (even though it’s an hour long) because it’s a great antidote to all the parenting insanity that I feel dominates the playgrounds and mommy and me groups these days. I can’t compare parenting today to any other time in history but I think it’s fucking hard now, what with 10,000 books on the topic, and militant parent types coming at you from every direction telling you to MAKE YOUR OWN BABY FOOD! and NEVER LET THEM WATCH TV! and BREASTFEED OR ELSE! this is just a really great, well-rounded conversation about what we really need to do with our kids which is help them become awesome adults.

I made a pledge to myself recently to toss the parenting books and just start following my own gut again (or for once) because every parenting book is amazing and brilliant until it stops making sense with who your own actual human child IS. And paying attention to who they actually are is the first step in the right direction.

This is such a better time than that Slaughter article in The Atlantic though I applaud the author for sharing her thoughts. Our culture has a back-assward approach toward women, family, health care, work-life balance, you name it. So the only way to even begin to win is to create your OWN definition of success and have a sense of humor when you fall short of the mark. That’s about all we can control. Nora Ephron had it right, I think. She will be sorely missed.

@xx4xmas, the grassroots twitter movement to encourage holiday shoppers to spend their dough with women-led companies, is going strong on this second day of December. Tereza, who is spearheading the effort, asked me to highlight one of the companies from the master list today and though I tried to convince myself to choose something I’ve never written about/promoted before I just couldn’t resist talking about 20x200 because it is genuinely my favorite retail site on the web.

Jen Bekman, 20x200’s founder, is a Manhattan gallerist who loved art but hated how exclusive and snobby the art world is. She wanted to democratize it and demystify it and make it both easier for her artist friends to sell art and affordable for people who love art but aren’t made of money to live with art.

I included some of the prints that I’ve either given or received from 20x200, ranging in price from $20 to $200. I get so much joy out of giving, getting and living with art I think a gift certificate to 20x200 is slam dunk of a gift for really anyone on your list. The certificate itself is beautifully designed, it arrives in a spiffy envelope and gives the receiver the chance to add a piece of art to their lives that they may grow to love infinitely more than anything else they’ve ever spent twenty bucks on.

Not convinced? Well, I tried. If fine art’s not your thing, there’s always this. Betony Vernon is woman-owned, of course.

Ridiculousness and inappropriateness are often the very foundation of humor,” Judge Philip Simon of Indiana wrote. ” The provocative context of these young girls horsing around with objects representing sex organs was intended to contribute to the humorous effect in the minds of the intended teenage audience.

But he strongly disagreed with the school’s assertion that the photographs qualified as “sexual misconduct” under Indiana law, since there was no actual nudity.

The judge made the point that the girls posted the photos on Facebook for their friends to see – not to display to the entire school.

“Not much good takes place at slumber parties for high school kids, and this case proves the point,” he said.

I think this is a win for free speech and though I’d be horrified if my daughter was involved, I’d hope she wouldn’t be thrown out of school or off her sports team for this. Rather, it’s a great teaching moment: Don’t put raunchy photos of yourself on the internet. Period.

This is one of many references I’ve seen him make to his “struggling” actor days, which I think is awesome and I’m a little bit in love with him for it. Its funny how rarely you hear successful actors mention this period of their lives.

Lest this become a blog about nothing more than pictures of me and the mostly famous people I’m interviewing for @aoldaybreak, let me just say that while I was shooting this fun interview with Fred Armisen, my little Whalen was at home sick with his very first cold. He turns 10 months tomorrow so we’ve been lucky on the health front (except for that first 5 days in the NICU…) but the cold reared its ugly head on Saturday and the poor boy has barely slept since because he can’t breathe. So whilst I was laughing it up with Fred and wearing his signature glasses in this pic, my mind was on the boy and how many minutes remained until I could see him again.

He was doing much better when I finally say him this evening, laughing and smiling like a perfectly healthy boy and we all had a great, casual early bird Valentine’s dinner at Westville East.

I’m grateful that the cold is on the way out and I’m grateful for my steady-as-a-rock valentine, my husband, who I’m just as smitten with as I was on our first Valentine’s day back in 2005.

P.S. Fred Armisen is pretty funny in his new show, Portlandia on IFC.
